A Malbec to Savor
I must admit, I love savoring a glass of bold, structured Malbec on its own, perhaps with some crisps or nuts as companions. But this is a wine that’s as enjoyable with lively conversation as it is with food, making it the perfect choice for memorable moments. Today, let me introduce you to Chakana Anyi, a red wine crafted from Argentina’s most iconic grape, Malbec.
The Chakana and the Spirit of Ayni
Chakana Anyi embodies the Andean soul, taking inspiration from ancient Chakana culture—a worldview based on interconnectedness, where all things have their place in the cosmic web. This philosophical foundation honours unity, believing that every element of life is interwoven, and nothing exists in isolation.
At the heart of Chakana Anyi is the Ayni philosophy of reciprocity, practiced by indigenous Andean communities for centuries. Here, giving precedes receiving—a deep-rooted value that resonates in every glass.
Biodynamic and Organic Agriculture
The vineyards of Anyi are tended with organic and biodynamic principles, emphasizing regenerative agriculture with minimal intervention. Since its founding in 2002, this young, vibrant team has adopted a Kaizen-inspired approach, focusing on self-improvement and conscious viticulture.
Through biodynamic farming, the Chakana team cultivates with nature rather than against it, fostering an ecosystem that nurtures vines, soil, and the community alike. The result is honest, pure wines that echo the vitality of their land. This commitment to heritage, harmony, and quality, aligned with the brand’s vision, resonates deeply with my own belief in the power of reciprocity and continuous growth.
The Altamira Region: Where the Mountains Shape the Wine
Nestled in the renowned Altamira sub-region at the southern end of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina, the vineyards of Anyi lie among Argentina’s most esteemed terroirs. The Altamira area, surrounded by the imposing Andes to the west, benefits from rich, mineral-laden soils influenced by volcanic deposits from the Tupungato volcano. These soils, with their mix of sand, silt, gravel, and minimal organic material, lend depth and vibrancy to the wines, enhancing the character of Malbec grapes in particular.
Here, altitude is the key. At 3,500 feet above sea level, the vineyards experience long, sunlit days that ripen the grapes to bold complexity, while cool mountain nights preserve acidity and bring out delicate floral notes. This unique combination creates wines with rich body, fresh acidity, and beautifully balanced aromatics, perfectly suited to the deeply colored and flavor-packed Malbec variety.
The region’s low rainfall is managed by traditional flood irrigation, drawing on Andean meltwater. This practice not only supports grape health but also prevents the spread of Phylloxera, a disease that has challenged many wine regions worldwide.
Wine Characteristics
Chakana Anyi offers a rich New World expression of Malbec: ripe fruit, firm tannins, and remarkable popularity. Grown in the south of Altamira at Finca Ayni, the grapes are nurtured in calcareous soils layered with native flora at an altitude of 4,000 feet, and the wine is aged in German oak barrels, adding layers of complexity. Expect flavors of forest floor, bright acidity, dark berries, mint, and a hint of eucalyptus—all beautifully integrated.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pair Chakana Anyi with beef, venison, or game meats. The wine’s intensity and layered flavors complement the richness of these dishes, making every sip an experience in true Andean tradition.
